Arti Appanah, PhD Candidate with GSHSS, University of Melbourne

My name is Arti, I’m doing my PhD at the
University of Melbourne through the school of social political
sciences in collaboration with the Brotherhood of Saint Lawrence. Yes, so my PHD’s actually funded by the
Brotherhood of Saint Lawrence. But I’m enrolled through the
University, so I’m based at the Brotherhood and
that’s where I conduct my research but I still have contact with
the supervisors from the University as well as the library resources and
my course work component of PhD is at the University as-well. I
started my psychology degree at Monash University and I did a double major psychology and marketing
and I quite enjoyed the business and psychology components so I
carried on doing a master’s degree in Industrial Organizational Psychology. Then
within my Masters Degree I had a research project which was on
the aging population and I really enjoyed that
aspect, because it was quite relevant to Australia’s aging population and other
OECD countries an aging populations. So it inspired
research interest within that area and for me to
carry on doing some further study. Because I am in my first year study
so what I am involved in there is just
putting together my research proposal and methodology. But, I also help out on the larger and
ARC project that I’m funded through. So help
out with doing the things like doing the qualitative
interviews or transcribing for that and gaining other research skills relevant to my
project. Melbourne Uni is one of the few universities that actually of a course
like for the PhD. So I’ve really enjoyed doing that aspect
of it and just the networking opportunities that it brings me as-well, as well as the workshops and that
are offered by the academic skills units for the PhD, I fine those really really
helpful.
