Barry Smith, PhD – How I Became Interested in Ontology

Why why did I become interested in
ontology? The source of all of this was in my time as an undergraduate when I
was studying maths and philosophy. I wanted to do a PhD on the topic of what
makes a mathematical theorem beautiful. So the aesthetics of mathematics. But I
needed a framework and the first author I discovered who had a framework for
understanding questions like that was a Polish philosopher by the name of In-Garden, who was quite famous for his work on aesthetics. It turns out that In-
Garden’s main framework for doing aesthetics, is called ontology, and ever
since I read In- Gardens work, I’ve been working more and more ontology and less
and less on aesthetics and that’s where i am today.
