SCARIEST CAMBRIDGE INTERVIEW // ASIAN AND MIDDLE EASTERN STUDIES (AMES)

Hi there! I’m Jo An Ma~ A Cambridge University student reading Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. Today I’d like to share with you all my Cambridge University interview experience. Most applicants would have 2 interviews: the general interview and the subject interview. Today I want to focus on my subject interview. So, let’s get started! My interview started on time and I was greeted by two professors. One specializes in Chinese Studies and the other specializes in Japanese Studies The first few questions were mainly an extension from the themes which I mentioned in my personal statement, asking for my opinions and wanting to know about my thought process. I was also given a question which tests my Japanese ability. The question was dead easy so I’m sure anyone who has learnt Japanese before, would know how to answer it. But don’t worry if you don’t speak the language!! The Asian and Middle Eastern Studies course is ab initio and nearly half of my classmates started without knowing anything about the language at all! The reason I think I was given this question is that I have mentioned in my personal statement that I have done some Japanese before Although it is useful if you speak the language, you are not disadvantaged at all if you don’t! Surprisingly, I was also given the question ‘why did I choose my college’ which I thought I was repeating myself because I have already mentioned it in the general interview. So I just answered the same thing! The last question I had was about my future plans and the professor’s exact words were ‘do you know what are you getting yourself into’ I mean, who would ask that? I honestly don’t remember what exactly did I answer but knowing me, I probably just said yes! This interview only lasted for 8 minutes. As the University of Cambridge official website says, it is supposed to last for 20 to 45 minutes. When I left the interview room and looked at my watch, I was like: ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?? Was I so bad that the interviewers couldn’t bear with me for more than 8 minutes? What did I do wrong? Is it my answers or my thinking? But here I am! Studying in Cambridge! So Lesson of the story: Anything can happen at the interview, you just have to do your best! And that’s the end to my subject interview experience! This is my first ever youtube video so please bear with me if I sound a bit unnatural>
