UCF Downtown: Investing in Our Future

[gentle instrumental music] – In Orlando we are so fortunate
to have two institutions, Valencia College and UCF, whose mission is really about access, believing that there
is no corner on talent. The more we open up our doors
to promising young people who can make a difference, the greater this region is gonna be. – Just having a structural presence of an educational entity
makes a difference. It creates a sense of
aspiration towards education. It’s important for us to stay in touch with the community and
the community members, and to understand how we
might provide training, how we might provide workshops that might assist them in their growth and in their development. It’s also important that the
programs and the services that you would normally find
in an academic community, be open and available to the community. – I see children’s lives impacted. People can’t be what they can’t see. And because we explore opportunities, and show them that there is
life outside of their community, it gives them hope. – One of the things we know
about opening up access to higher education, is to expose young people
to it much earlier. And there are many people who
can’t even imagine themselves on a college campus. But it you’re a second grader at our new public school
across the street, you can walk and see what
a college campus looks like early in your life and start imagine that, that’s what I want for
myself in a few years. Conversely, the university can
reach out and be a big part of helping to prepare those
students for that future. The idea of building a campus in a downtown is that you are so close to all these learning opportunities. Students, long before they graduate, interact with businesses and organizations where they might work one day. And for those organizations, they get to meet students
and learn new ideas, and also identify promising candidates who may come to work for them one day. – Why downtown? Because that’s where
the need resides, right? And that’s where there’s
the greatest opportunity, and it’s also a place where we’ve found a tremendous intersection
of energy and synergy with our public and our private partners. – And we have amazing partners in this, certainly Valencia and UCF, but the city, Creative Village and so many other partners
who wanna be a part of it and we want to embrace. We couldn’t be more
appreciative of the generosity of the amazing donors
who have come together to make this possible, led by Dr. Phillips Charities and so many others in the community who have invested in our future, and the future of our community here. [lively instrumental music]
