Western Illinois University – Campus Walking Tour

Welcome to Western Illinois University! I
am President Jack Thomas. It is my pleasure to serve as your guide, along with some of
our outstanding students, as you take this tour of our beautiful campus and learn more
about Western Illinois University. This is Sherman Hall, which houses Admissions,
Financial Aid, Scholarship programs and many more departments that serve our students.
Sherman Hall is Western’s landmark building; and with its iconic bell tower it is a stately
presence on our campus. When you visit the University, you will start your tour at Sherman
Hall. The Union, which has undergone major renovations,
offers a food court, a convenience store, a computer store, computer access, ATMs and
cashiers’ stations. The Office of Student Activities, including Western’s 250 student
organizations, and the Student-Parent Assistance Center are housed in the Union. The University
Bookstore, located in our University Union, is the place to get your WIU gear, textbooks,
commencement apparel and more. Whether you need a coffee break between classes, or a
place to meet your friends, the University Union is here for you.
Thompson Hall is one of Western Illinois University’s nine residence halls. WIU was the first housing
program in the state to freeze both room and meal plan rates. That means as long as you
continue to live with us, there will be no increase in your rate.
All of Western’s residence halls are air-conditioned and provide students with Wi-Fi, cable, computer
labs, laundry facilities and more. Some of our halls feature suite style living arrangements,
and single rooms are always an option. University Housing & Dining Services offer a wide-range
of programs and services to create environments that enhance the academic and personal growth
of students living on-campus. Stipes Hall, one of the University’s academic
buildings, is home to academic programs within the College of Business and Technology as
well as Western’s signature academic program Law Enforcement and Justice Administration.
Students, faculty and staff can stop by Dividends Café in Stipes for a cup of coffee and a
snack between classes. Our academic buildings and training facilities
at Western provide electronic and traditional classrooms, computer labs, hands-on training
rooms, and more for our students to prepare for a successful career.
Whether you want to lift weights, go for a run, take a dip in the pool, or socialize
with friends, Western’s Spencer Student Recreation Center has something for everyone.
An elevated track, cardio and weight facilities, boxing, swimming, exercise classes, wallyball
and racquetball courts, basketball courts, intramural sports, and more. The Spencer Student
Recreation Center has everything you need to stay fit and have fun! All WIU students
are members of the Student Recreation Center and can use the center at no additional cost.

worldwide. University Libraries also include a Music Library, the Physical Sciences Library,
the Curriculum Library, and the WIU-Quad Cities Library.
The Multicultural Center is home to the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center, Casa Latina Cultural
Center, and Women’s Center. Being located in one central location provides the campus
community with educational, social and cultural programs, and resources that will help to
focus awareness and appreciation of ethnic and gender diversity.
